Teacher ReviewQuick, now, what was the Magna Carta and when was it signed? Ah, yes, cast your mind back to World History in junior year–it’s all coming back to you now: Runnymede, King John, 1215. In Latin, Magna Carta means the “great charter,” and the theme of this puzzle is a map of the ancient world, a great charter of a dissimilar sort, with explorers standing in front, rather than the Magna Carta signed by King John in 1215. This puzzle is based on an anonymous painting called Magna Carta, executed in a golden Renaissance style with an ancient map of the world in the center surrounded by littler panels of the months, allegorical illustrations, and widely known and esteemed explorers. The print on the 1,500-piece puzzle is very little and a little difficult to read as it’s printed in black on a dark gold background (and in Latin as well), but the names of the months may be read in Latin and equated to the names of the months we use today. Students could likewise compare this antiquated view of the continents to a modern map or globe for a lesson in historical geography. But, essentially, this is an attractive, challenging puzzle that ought to be enjoyed for it is golden design and amusement value. –Marcie Bovetz is a former children’s librarian and senior editor in instructional publishing, as well as the author of 41 children’s books.
