CUTE & UNIQUE PUZZLE

We bought this block puzzle for our 1-year-old daughter. It’s very cute and unique. I like the chunky blocks, and since they are multi-sided there are 6 different puzzles to create. They come in an easy-to-store box and the blocks are sized right for kids’ hands. The only negative thing I can say is that I thought the blocks would be made out of wood, but instead they are made out of cardboard and the paper images are glued on. It’s possible that the paper could get torn at the edges over time. But even so, they seem to be constructed well and I would still recommend this toy to anyone who is looking for a different, unique puzzle.

A little too Tough for Me

I’m a crossword fanatic and was turned on to cryptic or “British” crosswords a few years ago. They add a new twist to the concept, which is enjoyable, and adds a great deal more challenge, however, not enough of them are published in the States. Most come from England and some of the references in the clues are rather obscure, answers usually in British slang or referring to British persons. I have had to cheat a lot (look at the answers), and sometimes I still can’t figure out how the clue refers to that particular answer. I’d try one of the Mensa cryptic crossword books (they have 2 now), or the one published by the New Yorker magazine. It’s nice to have a challenge, but when its too hard, its just frustrating. I don’t think I will buy another edition by this publisher.

Since these cryptics stretch the use of language to begin with, the ones created for British publications are virtually indecipherable, due to slang, usage and spelling differences.

Everything you need to have fun…(and learn, too)

This is a great book, chock-a-block w/ very accessible experiments. One of the best features is the way the experiments are grouped together: a ‘theme’ (say, Acids, in the Chemistry section) will have a group of experiments of varying degrees of complexity that together add up to a pretty good understanding of the concept. Also, most of the materials are readily at hand- for many of them we really did already have everything in the house. This is esp. gratifying for the kids, who of course want to do the experiment *right now*. I would imagine that home-schooling families would enjoy this, but our school-going kids enjoy doing these experiments after school & on weekends.

p.s., one of the easiest experiments is also a real showstopper, though it takes a couple of days to complete: dissolving the eggshell of an egg, leaving the egg inside intact!

Wow, what a great book! My kids love it. It is set up as a series of activities that begin with a question followed by an experiment that answers the question. Questions such as “How do you peel a raw egg?”, “Does air take up space?” and “Why can’t I taste medicine when I plug my nose?” are all examples of questions posed in the book. The fun is in the experiment that answers the question. I think I counted something like 30 different experiments from 5 main science areas (biology, chemistry, physics, planet earth, and the human body). Following each area is a “science fair project” for the kids to use at the next science fair at school! What a great resource it will be for our family in the years to come. All in all a great book at a great price.

I wish I had this book 15 years ago as we spent time at home playing “Mad Scientist” with our young children. Our kids are now all teenagers and have enjoyed exploring Robinson’s book.
Children LOVE to experiment with their world. “The Everything Kids’ Science Experiments Book” offers parents and kids alike a wide array of adventures in science including: Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Earth Science, and the Human Body. This book is oriented to kids ages 7-12 but offers information and exploration for budding scientists of all ages. I appreciate this book’s easy entrance into the world of science and the three levels of experiments for each area of science: 1)Simple Home Experiments; 2)More Detailed “Kid’s Lab Lessons”; 3)Science Fair Projects. The art layout (including multi-color printing, fun-graphics, puzzles, and side-bars), the splashy presentation of information (including fun facts, words to know, dumb-jokes, online science websites and cool quotes) and a complete index make this book an excellent resource for parents, homeschoolers and science teachers. I had read JF Freedman before and remembered I had actually loved his style. Fallen Idols was an peculiarly good mystery and tautly put together. Any pardon will do when it is a Chicano in west L.A. at three a.m.. It turns out that the T.V.’s have been stolen from a warehouse in Long Beach and Roberto lands in jail. But Roberto is no gang banger vato. He is a pillar of hard, honorable work in his poor side of town and well thought of by everyone. Never been arrested, He is happily married with children. He is a lay minister in a store front church and a devoted youth counselor. He also owns a gardening/land scape business servicing the rich in west L.A. and he likewise owns an old box truck that he uses to make extra cash as a mover or deliverance man from time to time. But, he was caught with a load of stolen goods, and he is a minority in Los Angles.

One of Roberto’s clients is the very wealthy, Amada Burgess, Los Angles royalty. Amada comes forward, and uncharacteristically vouches for Roberto’s good name and with that confidence, Jessica wins an acquittal at trial. Mean while, The Full Moon killers is still out there, even even though he missed a month along the way.

A few months go by when when early one morning Roberto is sitting in his truck, waiting to begin work at 7 a.m sharp. He is reading the paper and drinking a great deal of McDonalds coffee when he is neared by Lt. Cordova. Roberto, now leery of any contact with the police, figures he is being harassed but lets the police search his truck. They find not one thing because Roberto of course has done nothing, but just as they are regarding to let him go on his way, Cordova finds incriminating proof underneath the floor mat of Roberto’s truck. the Full Moon Killer has taken another female vitim and it is only a couple of blocks from where Roberto was sitting in his truck. He is booked as The Full Moon Killer and the proof is mighty powerful.

Can Jessica have been wrong? Could Amanda’s faith have been misplaced. You’ll find out when you are seduced by this mystery/legal adventure story with twists and turns to satisfy the most jaded reader.

Freedman’s prose are tighter than a good alibi, and engrossing as you could want. The characters are well written and he seems to have the capacity to get inside of the head of not only Layers and cops, women and Chicanos, but the wealthy with mysteries of their own. He paints this tale on a back-drop of the prejudice that covers L.A. like the smog it’s famous for and the detail in the court room is not only realistic but well researched. I may only hope he starts turning out more than one book each two or three years, and I wouldn’t mind seeing Jessica again, or even Luke Garrison and his Harley.

Last of the Series?

This was definitely the weakest of the three books because there wasn’t really a lot of interaction between Katie & Chief McDonald. On the plus side, there’s a really good bit of Harry, who has a new, very interesting girl friend. She’s a diamond in the rough, and I came to like her a lot. Although the resolution was logical, there just wasn’t enough to the case itself to satisfy me. And what of Ginny Sue’s love life? Aunt Pru & Sam? I love the Grannies, and I do really like Katie. The ending seemed to resolve some storylines, but I hope it’s not the end of this series. More, please.
