I bought this at Michaels, so luckily only spent $5 instead of the 40 mentioned here. I still feel that this was wasted money. When looking at the “instructions”, instead of giving a step by step it says to follow the numbers, but the numbers are very unclear. The pieces are extremely flimsy and even when the directions were figured out, some of the assembled parts would not stay together. It is not worth the money unless, like we plan to do, you assemble to the best of your ability and than siege the castle with the use of bb guns and lighter fluid.

While everyone knows Cora Felton as the famed puzzle lady, she hides the secret that she can’t solve cross word puzzles. It’s really her niece Sherry Carter that creates the daily newspaper columns. However, Cora has discovered a talent for solving Sudoku puzzles. And when she is asked to create a Sudoku book for a Japanese publisher, she gladly agrees.

Sending Sherry to sign the contracts turns out to create some problems when Sherry signs with the wrong businessman. Turns out there are rival Japanese publishers in town trying to get Cora under contract. But things turn deadly when a stranger turns up dead with a crossword puzzle and a Sudoku in his pocket. Do those puzzles mean anything or are they just red herrings?

As much as I like this series, I am beginning to wonder if it is running out of steam. The characters have often been two dimensional, but they seem stuck in a rut. I mean, Sherry’s ex-husband is still hanging around town, his new wife still hasn’t divorced the creep, he’s still being accused of murder, and it is still causing friction between Sherry and fiancee Aaron. And, actually, I’ve just described the last three books in the series.

Fortunately, the humor and witty word play are still present here. I was laughing at loud at a few of the passages, including one that discusses how no one can be murdered in the small town without there being a cross word puzzle near by. When I wasn’t laughing, I was often grinning. The mystery was puzzling as always, although the climax was a bit too showy. Frankly, I don’t even get why it was set where it was set.

All told, I did enjoy this entry, but the flaws are getting more pronounced. I hope the author is able to come up with some new storylines for the characters before things get older than they already are.

Fun series

While similar to Nero Blanc’s Crossword Mysteries (which I haven’t read), I took an instant liking to Parnell Hall’s Puzzle Lady Mysteries. They are just fun, clever and breezy. I like the characters and the clever dialogue. The plot is convoluted but I try not to dwell on it and just enjoy the book. I can’t wait for the next installment.

It was glaring the change of format though with the switch of publishers (to St. Martin’s Minotaur). I wish the books would just be released in paperback format from the get go because I think it would be more popular.

I would recommend the Archie McNally series by Lawrence Sanders if you enjoy fun mysteries.

THE MOST EASILY UNDERSTANDABLE BOOK ON FLEXAGONS OUT THERE

You can’t go wrong with this. This has the flexagons ready to be cut out, on very nice, easily foldable paper. The author has three “practice” flexagons so you can make mistakes on them, before you create the nicer flexagons Mr. Mitchell has printed with pretty designs on them. I’m not sure 4 – 8 is the right age range for this book, but I’m not an expert on that. Flexagons are lots of fun, and this is an easy way to get into them. (Reading this may prepare you to read FLEXAGONS INSIDE AND OUT, but I found I still couldn’t understand the directions in that book even after reading this one.)

I was looking around the web for this but it was too hard, but luckly I found this on Amazon.com and bought it as soon as possible. This is the best book I have seen of flexagons the temlate are there and they have thick paper template which help it last plus it has template to practice on. Also the directions are good and understandable.

Nice Little Stereo; Terrible Clock

I bought this specifically for my daughter’s room to replace a clock radio that ran fast on time. The stereo itself is perfect for her room, but I am going to have to go out and get a small clock as well; since this one does not have a backlight for the clock. It is very difficult to see even with the lights on in her room. If you are looking for a room stereo only, this is a nice little one. If you are looking for a clock radio, you should look at another product.

Also, when I bought this it came with Amazon’s free shipping.

More than I expected

This is a nice unit but larger than I expected. (Don’t know what I was thinking.) This is more a book-shelf unit. It is a bit confusing on how to use it. I was looking for a clock radio (which this is) that would let me see the time at night. (I think it does.) I also wanted it to play MP3s. (It does but I have to plug the small MP3 unit into the back of this unit.) When in bed this is not convenient as it has to be unplugged from the back to see the clock light up or hear the radio. I am keeping it but not for the bedside. Much too involved for what I wanted.

The little engine that could.

Do not let the size of this stereo turn you away from the purchase. it has a crystal clear sound. It is very easy to use. And because it is small, it will fit on a library shelf or on any small shelf. I have nothing negative to mention. If you need a small stereo for your young daughter who enjoys listening music and you can make her happy plus have some peace in your living room. It plays MP3 too. Way too cool. I guess it is true. Good things comes in small packages.

Yet Another Good Read from Nero Blanc

In this tenth installment in Nero Blanc’s Crossword Mystery series, cruciverbalist Belle Graham and her P.I. husband Rosco Polycrates investigate the disappearance of a friend’s husband. Dan Tacete, a local dentist and all-around nice guy given to donating his time to treat charity cases, fails to return home one evening after leaving work in his Ford Explorer–the least expensive vehicle in his private fleet. Dan’s wife Karen naturally turns for help to her friends Rosco and Belle. While Rosco steals time from his current investigation of a car theft ring to help her, Belle begins to receive a series of crossword puzzles which she suspects may be related to the Tacete case. Certainly the clues in the third puzzle Belle receives seem to refer to one of the primary suspects in Dan’s disappearance, the victim’s surly business partner Jack Wagner. But Jack isn’t alone in attracting the attention of Rosco or his former partner, Newcastle’s chief homicide detective Al Lever: among the other suspects in the case are a number of Dan’s down-and-out patients, his secretary Bonnie and her wayward brother, and Karen Tacete herself, who is suspiciously hostile to Belle and Rosco after requesting their help and who is unwilling to share everything she knows about the case with the police. Who among these, if any, dunnit? Readers are unlikely to figure that out before the clues–both forensic and linguistic–lead Belle and Rosco to a startling conclusion.

But I keep coming back to the series for its homey ambiance: the happy, pun-filled relationship of Rosco and Belle themselves, and the clutch of Newcastle denizens who join the couple in holding down a table at Lawson’s Coffee Shop every Saturday morning. The murder rate in Newcastle may be startlingly high, but Rosco and Belle’s home town is nonetheless a pleasant place to spend one’s time.
