Quality not what I had expected

I wanted a nice gift for wife for Christmas and she loves Scrabble. In theory, this is a nice set. I like the rotating board and storage option, but I feel that the quality is not what I would expect for $100. The “sticker” overlay for the board has a wrinkle in it and scratches easily. The wood has a ding in it. I had hoped that this would be something that would last for years to come, but I am not sure why the manufacturing is not up to par. It, like most toys and items these days, is made in China. The game itself is fun and I like the nice touches, but I think Hasbro’s quality control may be slipping.

This edition is very nice for any true Scrabble fan, especially with the wood rotating board and nice tile bag. However, this can be purchased directly from Hasbro [...]. Why pay double the price when it is in stock there? You can also frequently find coupons for free shipping and 10-25% off as well. I love Amazon but some of the people who sell products on through Amazon are pathetically over-priced.

This product is extremely low quality and absolutely not worth the price. Scrabble is a great game, but this product is by no means “deluxe.” The tile holders are glued together crookedly, the “leather” bag is plastic, the wood is particle board, and the construction is flimsy. Don’t buy this product.

These are so easy I absolutely get an ego-boost each time I complete one. (Try to do two a day as brain exercise !!). I don’t want to be challenged–I want to feel like I have accomplished something and this ENTIRE SERIES allows me that opportunity. YEA for Will Shortz. Keep them coming !

This crossword book is definitely a great find amongst the competetors. I have tried other crossword books with different authors and they are either impossibly hard (though labeled as easy), or they don’t adhere to the very simple “rules” of crossword clues. For example, if a clue is plural, then the answer must be plural (“Dogs” …”Canines”) or if the clue is an adjective, then the answer must be an adjective (“Wet”…”Moist”). This book does everything right which makes it a very understandable and easily approachable series. I have found that the NY Times Easy puzzles are the best for my current state, since my knowledge of history, theater, and the world map are lacking. This difficulty level is for SMART average joes, you definitely need to know alot to get the answers, but at the same time, you still have a fighting chance if you never took an AP English course (though that helps!). The only problem I have with this series is that you see A LOT of recurring answers, like “Oboe”, “Atop”, “Dr. No”, etc. I suppose its just easier to reuse those based on the layout of the puzzles, but still, I’ve seen these answers several pages in a row, where I’m at the point of sighing and saying “It’s ‘Agog’…again?!” But yes, these NY Times Easy Crosswords are the best you are going to find in this puzzle genre, they are at a good difficulty level, sometimes too easy, but that’s good because it is less frustrating, though they are easy to fly through and do three a night! On the other side, they can be very hard if you don’t know your cities in Italy, or how to say key phrases in French. So I think overall this is a good medley of hard and easy clues that make up one very solvable puzzle book for people without masters degrees! Buy this series and no other!

A really useful tool for teaching map concepts!

In a word–Wow!

As a school librarian, I look for good, practical, teaching items to place in the Professional Library for teacher check-out only. This workbook, “25 Map Crosswords: Ready-to-go Reproducible Maps with Crossword Puzzles to Teach Key Geography Skills and Build Content-Area Vocabulary,” is an astonishing source to teach all kinds of map skills–you know the kind–on all those high-stakes tests!

Frankly, if I were a classroom teacher, I would buy my own copy to avoid potential absence of the book when needed (potential absence=already checked out). However, I know that some teachers cannot afford such expenses, so I try to help through the library. The maps go beyond what you might imagine. They afford practical, real-world experience, plus that pre-testing advantage. When I taught English at the high school level, English teachers were responsible for teaching how to read graphs and charts. Some of these “maps” fall into those categories.

Let’s examine a couple:
(Note: I bought my copy based on a vague description. I want to give readers more precise information. Why? Because this workbook is worth every penny–and more!!)
(The 25 maps are arranged in an increasingly higher level of thinking.)

Example 1: (the first one) It is called “Highways” with the map set in Arizona. The introductory note tells the student that “Highway maps don’t just show where roads lead to. They also show the different types of maps….”
A sample question: “Routes 80 and 10 come together in which town?” This answer goes in Down 13. In addition to the map and crossword, each item is set on two pages and always contains at least one block of factoids. “Highways: Arizona” has this: Today there are more than 42,000 miles of interstate highways….The Federal-Aid Highway Act of 1944 authorized construction of the interstate highway system.” I’m glad to know students will learn that!

Example 2: “Religions: World”, pp. 32-33. Introductory note: “This map shows the major religions of the world….useful for learning the culture of a place.” The factoid block tells the reader that Christianity has two billion followers, while Islam has one billion. A sample question: “This continent has more different religions than any other” (Across 14).

Other examples include Growth of Railroads: Europe, Products: Montana, Precipitation: Africa, City Map: London, Physical: Antarctica, Comparing maps: Baseball teams, 1952 to 1995, Subway: Washington, D.C., Metro, and Population Cartogram: World.

As you can see, these examples cover a wide range and variety of topics. What a teaching tool each one is!!

To whom do I recommend this workbook? To all teachers, both elementary and high school, of social studies and English/Reading. It is labeled for ages 9-12, but it would be quite effective in the general high school geography, English, and history classes. As the social studies teacher in my school noted, “You cannot teach the whys and wherefores of maps too many times.”

CUTE & UNIQUE PUZZLE

We bought this block puzzle for our 1-year-old daughter. It’s very cute and unique. I like the chunky blocks, and since they are multi-sided there are 6 different puzzles to create. They come in an easy-to-store box and the blocks are sized right for kids’ hands. The only negative thing I can say is that I thought the blocks would be made out of wood, but instead they are made out of cardboard and the paper images are glued on. It’s possible that the paper could get torn at the edges over time. But even so, they seem to be constructed well and I would still recommend this toy to anyone who is looking for a different, unique puzzle.

I have searched for a Sudoku version that was supported by Windows 7. I found none. Then I happened upon this version which offered a free trial but did not indicate it was supported by Windows 7. It worked. I liked it so I bought it. I will update my review after I have some experience. Its time for others to indicate if Windows 7 will support their software. In most cases I suspect the answer is yes. But the irritation created by a no answer is inexcusable.

Very hard to see, but like the puzzles

Even with the backlight turned on, the screen is very hard to see. The letters are very small, too. I am very nearsighted and need to bring the unit nearly up to my nose. The puzzles are challenging, though.

I use an un-clicked ball point pen and once you find the angle to hold it so you can see
