Fun and Challenging

My family likes to work puzzles while we watch our nightly television, and we were very pleased with this particular puzzle.

The puzzle fits nicely on a standard-sized kids’ poster board, the kind you can buy for a few cents at pretty much any school supply store. The finished puzzle size is approximately 17″ high and 27″ wide. The metallic sheen is very pretty without being an impediment to working the puzzle (although there was one and only one incident where a combination of the angle I was working and the overhead light made the puzzle a little too shiny to work, but a quick adjustment in posture took care of the problem). The puzzle pieces are just the right sizes and shapes for a 1,000 piece puzzle – nice and small with the standard array of shapes, nothing outlandish. The card stock of the puzzle is pleasantly sturdy and I don’t think a single puzzle piece was bent out of shape while we were working it.

I had expected this to be a potentially frustrating puzzle because I wasn’t sure if the silver oceans would have to be ‘brute forced’ into place rather than strategically inserted. Surprisingly, however, the puzzle itself is very detailed, with latitude and longitude lines running all over the map and little word labels everywhere. Pretty much every piece of the puzzle can be located and placed directly into place if you just stare at the front picture long enough. Which isn’t to say this is an easy puzzle – I found the challenge level to be pleasantly high without being impossible.

The only possible complaint I could have for this puzzle is that the pieces don’t snap together as firmly as some puzzles do, which resulting in an issue where if you lift out an incorrect piece, sometimes the surrounding pieces would want to follow because they didn’t cling closely to their neighboring pieces. This also meant that sometimes, very rarely, it’s tricky to tell if a puzzle piece *actually* goes into the spot it just loosely snapped into. This isn’t too much of a problem with the map areas, but the solid red border did cause us a couple of spots of trouble where we’d gather around and wonder if a piece “really” went in that spot or not. But I think little incidents like that are pretty much inevitable with a puzzle of this size, and I can count on my fingers the number of times it happened, so it wasn’t a problem.

This puzzle is pretty enough to preserve and hang on the wall, if you happen to have a bottle of Liquid Puzzle Saver Glue on hand. We chose not to glue our puzzle because we’d like to work it again someday, but it’s definitely nice enough to hang on the wall if you like ancient maps.

Very pretty.

My hubby saw this in a puzzle store but didn’t get it, then complained about not being able to find one like it anywhere. It took over a year, but I finally found someone that had it in stock. We put it together over a very snowy week. Now I’m trying to find a frame to hang it in his office, that’s how much he loved it!

Hours and hours of fun for the puzzle enthusiasts

I loved doing this puzzle. I had it together in one week. I was very pleased with the overall quality for the most part. I was somewhat disappointed b/c there were a few pieces that the puzzle cutter didn’t make it all the way through. But overall I was very happy with the quality, the pieces were sturdy and fit nicely together.
I also had to have my husband build me an extension (made of plywood, covered with material) for my card table b/c it was too big. But now that I have that I can do more than just 1,000 piece puzzles!

Defective Puzzle

My 15-year old granddaughter put this 2000 piece puzzle together in less than a week only to find out it was missing one piece. I called Amazon and they sent another puzzle, of which we had to go through 2000 pieces to find the one missing piece. After gathering some puzzle pieces together, my granddaughter discovered that the pieces are not cut the same way as the first puzzle. I have purchased many items from Amazon and have not had a problem, but think about a teenager spending all her time and effort in putting a puzzle together to find out there is one piece missing. She has another 2000 piece puzzle to put together, so we’ll see what hapens with that. I will never purchase another puzzle from Amazon again.

Fun, but a little too easy for adults.

Love these puzzles. This one is for beginners to this type. For a real challenge, try the “Dalmatians”.

A good team-building exercise

I purchased this puzzle as a team-building exercise for my co-workers. They worked together and finished it in record time and was very fun. Buffalo Games is a great company and makes quality puzzles!

My brother, Royce B. McClure not long back formulated the current World’s Largest Jigsaw puzzle and received official acknowledgement from the Guinness World Records organization. The 24,000 piece monster jigsaw is titled “Life – The Great Challenge” which is very suitable as it features so a lot of distinct elements of life and it surely is a great challenge!

To date, rather a few persons have taken on the challenge and survived. The very original to finish was the Slater family consisting of Scott and wife P.J. plus their 2 daughters Whitney and Sydney. They finished the World’s Largest Puzzle in just 34 days. Scott described the experience for us:

My wife P.J. and I live in Sacramento, CA, USA. We’ve been doing jigsaw puzzles since we met in college. We started little and worked up as we kept finding larger and more prominent puzzles to put together. To date we have finished puzzles ranging in size from 5000 to 24000 pieces. This includes 12000, 13500, and 18000 piece puzzles.

All the puzzles are mounted and displayed on the walls in our house like artwork. We are always on the lookout for more prominent puzzles and when I found the “Life” puzzle I purchased it that same day. After we got it the primary thing we wanted to know was how some subsections it came in and would each section fit on our table. Fortunately, the segmentations just fit the table with utterly no more room to spare. Last year we finished a 13500 piece puzzle that was similar to “Life” in that it contained above and under water displays. We finished that puzzle in 3 and 1/2 weeks. That was a personal record for us. Not that we were keeping track of those kind of things but to give you an idea it took us 3 months to do our 12000 piece puzzle which we finished in regards to 10 years ago. I think we’ve learned a few things when it comes to how to put huge puzzles together since then. Since the 13500 took us 3.5 weeks, I gave ourselves 6 weeks to finish “Life” since it’s not rather double the number of pieces.

Working principally after work and weekends, it took us approx 400 man hours to complete. That’s 200 hours for each of us. During the week I would specifically work from around 7pm until 2am and my wife would quintessentially work from 9pm until 2am. On the weekends I was commonly not home most of the day so I only got a couple hours each day but my wife would ordinarily spend most the entire day. We built one section at a time. We finished section 1 in 12 days. The introductory division always takes the longest because you don’t know the repeating patterns or the precise shape of each piece yet. Section 2 took us 6 days, division 3 and 4 each took 8 days. Notice how much less time each of the remaining subsections took. That was due to the fact that we could build on top of the former section and recognise incisively which shape piece we needed.

We plan to get this displayed on the wall very soon. We’re going to have to move our 12000 piece to a new emplacement since the wall it is presently on is the only wall huge sufficient for this puzzle. To mount the puzzle we’ll flip it over and put contact paper on the back to hold the pieces together. We’ll then use contact adhesive to cohere big sheets of foam board to the back. This will give it rigidity without adding much weight.

I have to say building this puzzle has been my most favorite. We employed all the tools and proficiencies we’ve learned over the years to build it. You would not believe the remarks we get when friends stop by. Most of our friends that knew we were working on this would call or come by for a progression report and to see how far we had gotten since they last checked in. Thanks again for the magnificent puzzle and experience!

Fun puzzle for a 4 year old

My 4 year old received this puzzle a couple of weeks ago, and has put it together several times. The picture has lots of animals that are different enough to make the puzzle easy to put together by animal. Each time she starts with a different animal and builds on it from there. I’ve been impressed with this brand of puzzle so far.
