My Favorite Crossword Puzzle Dictionary!

Although I’m sad to see the New American Dictionary has not been revised since 1986, I am buying a new copy since I found this to be absolutely the best crossword puzzle dictionary. The cat ate the front and back pages off of my old one (my fault for leaving the catnip package to close to it!), so I guess I’ll have to part with it and get a new one. It’s categories section is the best and includes categories such as: The Bible, famous names, foreign words, geography, mythology, presidential information and more. It’s a must to help find the answers for those last empty boxes!

New American Crossword Puzzle Dictionary

I purchased the latest edition of the dictionary edited by Albert & Loy Morehead to replace an edition I had purchased in the 1970′s. I cannot state what edition it was because the first 13 pages have been worn away by continual use. That edition was absolutely fantastic. The new edition (1986) is still good but somewhat disappointing because many “Categories” have been omitted and placed in a section named “Definitions and Answers” where they are not readily observable. For example, some of the categories I found helpful but which are no longer situated in the “Categories” section are: Anatomy and Health; Arms and Armor; Food & Drink; Lakes, Seas, Gulfs, Bays; Mountains & Volcanoes; Bridges & Dams; Natural History (many subcategories) Measures & Weights; Money & Coins; Tools & Implements; Wearing Apparel; Music Terms & Instruments; and some others. All in all, the dictionary is still great and I recommend it as a valuable addition to a puzzle solvers collection.

An essential guide

I use this in conjunction with the Dell Crossword Dictionary and find them complimentary. It has a nice category section, especially the geography section of rivers and cities, and the suggestions for some clues (i.e. animals, flowers, fish, and stars and constellations) is more extensive than many other dictionaries. While the word clues for three and four letter words is extensive, I find it a bit awkward to use. This dictionary shows much evidence of use in my hands and is well worthwhile.

This is a great book on Sudoku for kids. The book includes 150 puzzles. The puzzles are of various sizes: 4×4, 6×6, and 9×9. The solutions are at the end of the book. There are four levels of difficulty for the puzzles.

Tremendous at building Sudoku Skills

I bought this for my 6yo who’d been watching me do Sudoku. He started on the 4×4 problems and was knocking them out in a couple of minutes each. He worked straight through for about an hour and made it through 35 getting to ‘Level 2′, 6×6 puzzles. These also started easy, but got more challenging. By the time he was almost at Level 3, 9×9 puzzles, the 6×6 had gotten as hard as 6×6′s can get and were taking him ~10 minutes each. Now when he started the 9×9′s he didn’t get frustrated that they took longer, and he knew that as long as he didn’t give up he’d get the answers.

Frankly, I can’t imagine how any book could have done a better job of teaching him Sudoku, such that he is confident with full size puzzles!

Great for a 5th – 6th Grader

I ordered this for something for my just completed 5th grader to do this summer. I would say it is challenging for someone at that age – not too hard, but not too easy, and I highly recommend this compilation of puzzles. Games like these are great as it gets them thinking vs. the sterotypical playing video games and watching TV.

The Jigazo puzzle – the new thing out of Japan – is a jigsaw puzzle consisting of a rectangular arrangement of 300 pieces, all identically shaped, in a 15 piece wide, and 20 piece high rectangle. Each piece has the same color on it, in varying degrees of intensity, and gradation. The pieces are marked with distinctive icons. These icons concede the pieces to be on an individual basis identified, so that they may be placed in the rectify position to form an effigy by following the effigy map for the desired picture. By arranging these pieces in just the right way, nearly any effigy may be recreated.

In Japan, the word Jigazo means “self portrait”. To make a self-portrait (or any other picture you wish) with the Jigazo puzzle, just email a copy of your picture (or any other picture) to the puzzle manufacturer, and in a few minutes, you will receive a map. This map shows where each of the 300 pieces must be placed, and the proper orientation of each piece, to form the finished image. There is, of course, a limit to the amount of detail that the Jigazo puzzle may reproduce – but the fact that it works at all is incredible!

Okay, so now we’ve identified how a set of pieces with identical shapes but differing color shading may be changed around to make dissimilar pictures – but how is it possible that just 300 pieces could manufacture a picture of any individual on Earth? After all, there are almost 7,000,000,000 persons on the world – surely one puzzle can’t perhaps create that some dissimilar pictures…can it?

Yes, it may – without even trying! In fact the number of dissimilar images this puzzle may construct staggers the imagination. The total is a number so big that it outperforms the numbers that correspond to anything real in the known Universe!

Let’s take a peek at how that is possible: Start with an arbitrary arrangement of the 300 pieces in the puzzle. That’s picture number one. Now, since all pieces have identical shapes, each of those 300 pieces may be placed in four dissimilar positions, by rotating it 90 degrees each time. Doing that with the piece at the top left corner, we will have developed four (ever so slightly) dissimilar pictures.

Now, in each of those four versions of the picture, we may take the next piece on the top row, and rotate it to four dissimilar positions as well. That means that each of the four (very slightly) dissimilar pictures we invented by turning the basi piece now has four dissimilar versions as well.

Now, you may see a pattern forming. Rotating the primary piece, we have 4 dissimilar pictures. Rotating the second piece for each of those 4 pictures brings about 4 pictures as well. So, for the primary 2 pieces, the total number of pictures is given by 4 x 4 = 16. This may also be written as an exponential formula as: 4^2 = 4 x 4 = 16. In this notation, 4^2 means: “the number 4 multiplied by itself”.

Now, if we do this same thing with the third piece, we will have made 4 x 4 x 4 = 64 dissimilar pictures. Following the exponential way of showing this, we have four multiplied by itself three times, or 4^3 = 4 x 4 x 4 = 64.

Now that you see the pattern, the big question is, what number do you end up with when you multiply 4 times itself, 300 times? Well, in order to show that, we have to introduce another form of exponential number – the “powers of 10″. This is perchance intimate to you, since 10^2 = 10 x 10 = 100 = the number 1 followed by 2 zeros (2 is called the “exponent”). Likewise, 10^3 = 10 x 10 x 10 = 1000 = 1 followed by three zeros – so for exponents of 10, the exponent plainly tells us how some zeros to write behind the 1, to write out the number. Each time the exponent goes up by one, the number gets ten times larger.

So, back to our firstborn question: how big a number is 4^300? Well, it turns out that 4^300 is with regards to equivalent to this number: 10^180 – or the number 1 followed by 180 zeros! How big is that number? Really BIG! Its so large, it is more prominent than the number of protons in the entire known universe. While everyone knows Cora Felton as the famed puzzle lady, she hides the secret that she can’t solve cross word puzzles. It’s really her niece Sherry Carter that creates the daily newspaper columns. However, Cora has discovered a talent for solving Sudoku puzzles. And when she is asked to create a Sudoku book for a Japanese publisher, she gladly agrees.

Sending Sherry to sign the contracts turns out to create some problems when Sherry signs with the wrong businessman. Turns out there are rival Japanese publishers in town trying to get Cora under contract. But things turn deadly when a stranger turns up dead with a crossword puzzle and a Sudoku in his pocket. Do those puzzles mean anything or are they just red herrings?

As much as I like this series, I am beginning to wonder if it is running out of steam. The characters have often been two dimensional, but they seem stuck in a rut. I mean, Sherry’s ex-husband is still hanging around town, his new wife still hasn’t divorced the creep, he’s still being accused of murder, and it is still causing friction between Sherry and fiancee Aaron. And, actually, I’ve just described the last three books in the series.

Fortunately, the humor and witty word play are still present here. I was laughing at loud at a few of the passages, including one that discusses how no one can be murdered in the small town without there being a cross word puzzle near by. When I wasn’t laughing, I was often grinning. The mystery was puzzling as always, although the climax was a bit too showy. Frankly, I don’t even get why it was set where it was set.

All told, I did enjoy this entry, but the flaws are getting more pronounced. I hope the author is able to come up with some new storylines for the characters before things get older than they already are.

Fun series

While similar to Nero Blanc’s Crossword Mysteries (which I haven’t read), I took an instant liking to Parnell Hall’s Puzzle Lady Mysteries. They are just fun, clever and breezy. I like the characters and the clever dialogue. The plot is convoluted but I try not to dwell on it and just enjoy the book. I can’t wait for the next installment.

It was glaring the change of format though with the switch of publishers (to St. Martin’s Minotaur). I wish the books would just be released in paperback format from the get go because I think it would be more popular.

I would recommend the Archie McNally series by Lawrence Sanders if you enjoy fun mysteries.

I didn’t know when I ordered this puzzle that the pieces are of varying size from large to small. This enabled every member of the family – from ages 6 to 40 to work on the puzzle together. Its an absolute family favorite! My only complaint is that a few of the pieces were bent inside the box so that, in spite of excellent packaging and quick delivery, some of the pieces needed to lay flat under a heavy book for a few days in order to be used. The book worked, though, and this is truly my family’s favorite puzzle to build together.
