My Favorite Crossword Puzzle Dictionary!

Although I’m sad to see the New American Dictionary has not been revised since 1986, I am buying a new copy since I found this to be absolutely the best crossword puzzle dictionary. The cat ate the front and back pages off of my old one (my fault for leaving the catnip package to close to it!), so I guess I’ll have to part with it and get a new one. It’s categories section is the best and includes categories such as: The Bible, famous names, foreign words, geography, mythology, presidential information and more. It’s a must to help find the answers for those last empty boxes!

New American Crossword Puzzle Dictionary

I purchased the latest edition of the dictionary edited by Albert & Loy Morehead to replace an edition I had purchased in the 1970′s. I cannot state what edition it was because the first 13 pages have been worn away by continual use. That edition was absolutely fantastic. The new edition (1986) is still good but somewhat disappointing because many “Categories” have been omitted and placed in a section named “Definitions and Answers” where they are not readily observable. For example, some of the categories I found helpful but which are no longer situated in the “Categories” section are: Anatomy and Health; Arms and Armor; Food & Drink; Lakes, Seas, Gulfs, Bays; Mountains & Volcanoes; Bridges & Dams; Natural History (many subcategories) Measures & Weights; Money & Coins; Tools & Implements; Wearing Apparel; Music Terms & Instruments; and some others. All in all, the dictionary is still great and I recommend it as a valuable addition to a puzzle solvers collection.

An essential guide

I use this in conjunction with the Dell Crossword Dictionary and find them complimentary. It has a nice category section, especially the geography section of rivers and cities, and the suggestions for some clues (i.e. animals, flowers, fish, and stars and constellations) is more extensive than many other dictionaries. While the word clues for three and four letter words is extensive, I find it a bit awkward to use. This dictionary shows much evidence of use in my hands and is well worthwhile.

Very Good Puzzles But Not the New York Times Ones

These are very good to do in the book. You can also do the new ones on a daily basis online and for free. However, the archiving of the puzzles is limited online for free. So the book provides you with a mighty dose of 200 all at once. The difference between Monday’s puzzle and Friday’s is not as dramatic as that seen in the New York Times. I can do all days of the week with USA Puzzles. They are challenging yet doable. They do get more difficult as the week goes on but it is very gradual. These are especially nice ones to play online. The interactive feature clues you when you make a mistake so you can catch yourself before you are too far astray. You can also turn this feature off if you want more of a challenge.

You recognise I have not yet caught on to the sudoku craze but from what I understand this puzzle game may become rather addictive. Maybe that’s the reason I haven’t dived in yet. You see, there is something delectably delightful when it comes to solving puzzles and other brain teasers and I merely have way too much to do already. Yet with all my busyness, I try to get in a good crossword or two from time to time, and I make sure to do galore brain teasers. You must too and here’s why.

For one, these puzzles keep your mind sharp; for two, these games and brain stimulators keep your mind from wandering into other less desirable territories. The harder your brain works on solving such challenging mind games, the less energy you have to contemplate things like difficulties and other time consuming frivolities. If you think this proposition is hogwash then take me up on the challenge. Go get yourself a brain teaser, crossword, or sudoku book in your nearest Borders or Barnes & Noble. Learn the rules and get started to do these. Watch how after a few days–once the fever has caught on–you are less inclined to frivol away your cherished time on senseless and inane absurdities: like what the latest celebrity gossip is and what your neighbor all over the street just did to his garden with his new chain saw.

My father was an usual mailman yet he had an extraordinary zest for doing crossword puzzles. He had no college education, yet he could pound away at these black and white diagrams until all the spaces were full. I would watch him intently as he racked his brain to get that last clue and finish the grid. Little did I grasp the fascination so one day I, the college boy, asked the untutored mailman, “Dad, what is it regarding those stupid puzzles that you like so much?”

My father, annoyed that he had to lift his head from the clue trail, glacially looked up and stared me down. He responded with utter challenge: “You’re the college boy, let’s see if you know a three letter word for a sea eagle?” “A what?” I retorted, amazed by the question. “A three letter word for a sea eagle,” he repeated. Needless to say, I was dumbfounded by the question and rather challenged by the task. Within a week, I too was a crossword junkie.

When I contemplate the whole conception of brain teasers, math problems, sudoku, crosswords and the like, I marvel at how few people realize the outstanding joy that lies in taking these challenges head-on. Maybe this is why I turned out to be such a normal, fun-loving guy: I had too a lot of challenges on my mind to be sidetracked by nonsensicality and unproductive thoughts. Try it out for yourself and see whether you too do not become a junkie of the most eminent order. Indeed, we may afford more junkies like this in the world.

Long recognized as a great “puzzler,” not just for sudoku but for his NYTimes crosswords, Will Shortz provides 400 puzzles of difficulties ranging from “Light and Easy” to “Beware! Very Challenging!” Regardless of the level, these puzzles are scrupulously fair, requiring, in my experience, only two occasions of “trailing” (and those may have been my own fault), when most other such books often require the puzzler to use this “technique” many times during the book.

Will Shortz + Sudoku = Great puzzling

Will Shortz is a fabulous puzzle editor, and this collection is one of his best. The spine of the book is spiral, which fascilitates puzzle working. Extremely high quality paper makes it easy to erase notes or mistakes. I recommend this to anyone who enjoys sudoku. It has four levels of difficulty, 100 puzzles of each level.

Disappointing format

Don’t advertise “spiral bound” if the spiral binding has an awkward hard binding over it.

One would assume that the sole reason for advertising a spiral bound sudoku book is that customers want a book that will LAY FLAT ON A TABLE. This book does not. Having nothing to do with its content, the format of this book is very unfortunate and the description above is misleading.

About the Author

I was born in South Africa in 1973. I studied a potpourri of courses at university including science, business and jewelry design. My firstborn occupation was in the jewelry industry. Soon after getting married in 1996, I moved from employee to employer and started my own internet/web design company. It all started on 1760 by a man called John Spilsbury who was a mapmaker. The firstborn jigsaw puzzle he made was a map of the world. He pasted the map of the world to a piece of wood and cut out each country so that it may later be arranged back. Teachers started using Spilsbury’s puzzles to aid students learn geography lessons by putting the world maps together. Jigsaw Puzzles for adults emerged around 1900, and by 1908 the jigsaw puzzle craze was in progression in the United States.

Fun and Challenging

My family likes to work puzzles while we watch our nightly television, and we were very pleased with this particular puzzle.

The puzzle fits nicely on a standard-sized kids’ poster board, the kind you can buy for a few cents at pretty much any school supply store. The finished puzzle size is approximately 17″ high and 27″ wide. The metallic sheen is very pretty without being an impediment to working the puzzle (although there was one and only one incident where a combination of the angle I was working and the overhead light made the puzzle a little too shiny to work, but a quick adjustment in posture took care of the problem). The puzzle pieces are just the right sizes and shapes for a 1,000 piece puzzle – nice and small with the standard array of shapes, nothing outlandish. The card stock of the puzzle is pleasantly sturdy and I don’t think a single puzzle piece was bent out of shape while we were working it.

I had expected this to be a potentially frustrating puzzle because I wasn’t sure if the silver oceans would have to be ‘brute forced’ into place rather than strategically inserted. Surprisingly, however, the puzzle itself is very detailed, with latitude and longitude lines running all over the map and little word labels everywhere. Pretty much every piece of the puzzle can be located and placed directly into place if you just stare at the front picture long enough. Which isn’t to say this is an easy puzzle – I found the challenge level to be pleasantly high without being impossible.

The only possible complaint I could have for this puzzle is that the pieces don’t snap together as firmly as some puzzles do, which resulting in an issue where if you lift out an incorrect piece, sometimes the surrounding pieces would want to follow because they didn’t cling closely to their neighboring pieces. This also meant that sometimes, very rarely, it’s tricky to tell if a puzzle piece *actually* goes into the spot it just loosely snapped into. This isn’t too much of a problem with the map areas, but the solid red border did cause us a couple of spots of trouble where we’d gather around and wonder if a piece “really” went in that spot or not. But I think little incidents like that are pretty much inevitable with a puzzle of this size, and I can count on my fingers the number of times it happened, so it wasn’t a problem.

This puzzle is pretty enough to preserve and hang on the wall, if you happen to have a bottle of Liquid Puzzle Saver Glue on hand. We chose not to glue our puzzle because we’d like to work it again someday, but it’s definitely nice enough to hang on the wall if you like ancient maps.

Very pretty.

My hubby saw this in a puzzle store but didn’t get it, then complained about not being able to find one like it anywhere. It took over a year, but I finally found someone that had it in stock. We put it together over a very snowy week. Now I’m trying to find a frame to hang it in his office, that’s how much he loved it!

It is what it is and it is great.

I was buying the NY Times everyday just so I could do the puzzle at lunchtime at the office. In the area I lived, it was $1 a day! Do the math. This collection saved me a bundle.

As a habitual crossword puzzler, I switched from habitually buying the paper each morning to habitually zeroxing the next puzzle in this book. I found it much easier to copy the puzzles than to hold this rather bulky tome. And copying allowed me to enlarge them to a full letter size page if I so desired (though it was not necessary — the puzzles are their normal dimensions and fit two-to-a-page in this collection).

Working off a copy also discouraged me from turning the page and starting a different puzzle when I got stuck on the really tough Friday and Saturday puzzles.

If you’re a habitual puzzler, this book is a god send.

Bottom line(s): The price is obviously fantastic. The collection is obviously HUGE! The puzzles are just like the daily paper — from Monday-easy to Saturday-nearly-impossible. I never ran into a puzzle I remembered doing in the paper.

No cons, but some advice… It’s not the kind of book you’ll want to carry around since it is, of course, large. And if you’re not a habitual puzzler, it might end up on a shelf unused since it is a daunting number of puzzles.

Also, in case you’re a novice puzzler, the NY Times puzzles can get pretty hard. If you’re used to clues like, “Wheel OF Fortune’s Sajak” for p-a-t, you’re in for a challenge. Instead, you’ll be getting “foie gras” for p-a-t-e. (Frequent foreign language clues, people you’ve never heard of, obscure island names, etc.)

The good news is that your vocabulary will expand and you’ll learn a lot more than you would from the TV guide puzzle. I know I’ve learned a lot from the NY Times puzzles. Thank you, Will Shortz.

Many hours of entertainment in an inexpensive volume

If you have tried and liked the crossword puzzles in the New York Times, but do not subscribe to the newspaper, this book is for you. It is certainly more cost effective than subscribing just for the puzzles. There is also a crossword only online subscription option, incidentally, but this book probably packs more bang for the buck. If you have not previously solved New York Times puzzles, it’s worth trying a few before you buy the book.

A few things to be aware of: The daily puzzles in the paper increase in difficulty from Monday to Friday. As far as I can tell, the ones in the book are not arranged in any particular order. Also this is a compilation of puzzles that appeared over the past decade. In so far as a few questions deal with ongoing events, they are now harder than back when the events were in the news. Non-New Yorkers may be stumped by allusions to local personalities.

On the whole the book should provide many hours of entertainment.

NY Times Puzzle Book

I love crossword puzzles! This book is too awkward to use though for two reasons. One is that it’s heavy and hard to hold open anywhere except at a table (my favorite spot is the recliner or lawn chair!). The second reason is that the puzzle is on the wrong part of the page. It should be near the binding or even in the middle with the clues surrounding it. Again, it wouldn’t be as bad at the table, but that’s not where I do them.
The puzzles are great though!!

The 2009 Edition of the Sunday Times Puzzles

This book contains 200 Sunday Times crossword puzzles from the Shortz era, and you know how witty the definitions can be! Like all Sunday Times puzzles, they are of moderate difficulty, not super-hard like the Saturday ones.

The book is well-made, with good quality paper — much better than the slick glossy Times Sunday magazine paper that doesn’t take pencil or ink marks very well — and for those like me who tear the pages out and then use a clipboard, they tear out easily with no ragged edges.

As for the puzzles, well — is there anyone, anywhere who makes better big Sunday-style puzzles? I’ve done puzzles from papers all over the USA and the Times are easily the most fun to work.

Heartily recommended to puzzle fanatics and casual solvers alike.

I love to do crosswords. If I see a crossword anywhere, I check it out. However, I only do the puzzles that challenge me, and the Sunday Times puzzles are the most fun. This is a great puzzle book.

Excellent book!!

This is the kind of book that I was looking for weeks!! A first puzzle book for children to start learning to think about chess tactics. I believe children has to start with the most simple and basic problems/puzzles, so they learn without to much effort. Anyway I think the best resource about teaching chess to children (adults also) is Chess School for Beginners even better than the famous Learn to Play Chess with Fritz and Chesster but this book is very good for starters. Still couldnt find a really really good book to teach tactics to children, it looks like the chess writters are looking for little genius, focussing in very talented children instead of looking to improve the thinking process of the “regular” kids so they may become “chess genius”. OK, I’ll keep looking or someday I’ll write it myselft

An excellent book on the end game, showing ideas on how to queen pawns and how to block your opponent’s attempt to queen.
This is a useful book for all ages, with 90 problems that can be solved in 1-2 moves.
Very helpful to help children. I’m now using it with a teen student.
A good book for the money.
